On their 100th episode, Lost ended the life of fan favorite, Daniel Faraday. Lost’s resident expert on the Space Time Continuum was sent off with a great episode that expanded on his role in the lives of the surviving characters. In “The Variable,” we revisit the season opener to find out how Daniel came to walk about in the Dharma construction suit and meet Dr. Chang. Episode 14, also explained Daniel’s absentmindedness upon arriving on the island. And the final kicker, Faraday also turned out to be the son of Charles Widmore. Now, the only question remaining is: if Daniel’s parents’ surnames are Widmore and Hawking, why is his surname Faraday?

In honor Daniel’s passing into the Lost afterlife, here are Lost’s 5 Most Tragic Deaths. These deaths were not only shocking, but they also had the strongest impact on the overall character development of the survivors and had the greatest emotional impact on Lost fans.

faraday5) Daniel Faraday: Shot by Eleanor Hawking

Of all the tragic ways to die, nothing beats being shot in the back by your own mother. The worst part, as Daniel said in his dying breath, was that his mother must have known about it from the day she told him to stop playing the piano to the day she encouraged him to go to the island.

4) Boon Carlyle: Killed in Plane Crash

boone carlyleBoon was the first major character we saw die on Lost. Because of it, we learned how vulnerable the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were. Locke has a vision of a plane crashing into the forest. This prompts Locke and Boon to go into the forest to look for it. They found the plane teetering on the edge of the cliff. Boon climbed up find a radio and Mr. Eko’s dead brother in the plane. He used the radio to make contact with the survivors, right before the plane slipped and crashed onto the hidden Swan station. With the amount of special appearances Boon’s made so far, we can only wonder if Boon will stage a full blown revival before the series finale.

3) Mr. Eko: Killed by Smoke Monster/Island Spirit

mr_ekoAlthough we saw how brutal the Smoke Monster could be when it killed the pilot in the first episode, we never knew what the experience was like until the death of Mr. Eko. The monster showed him images of his brother’s death before thrashing Eko violently into the ground. In reality, the shocking death was a mercy kill requested by the actor, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Producer/writer Damon Lindelof explained that the actor did not like living in Hawaii. Lindelof said, “Our Mr. Eko plans very quickly derailed. Adawele’s unhappiness was almost instantaneous. On his second episode, he was expressing extreme dissatisfaction.”

2) Libby and Ana Lucia (Double Header): Shot by Michael

Everyone cheered Hurly for getting the “mega cute blonde chick.” They then cried when Michael gunned down her and Ana Lucia in a trade to get his son back. Was this double homicide a case of the wrong time and the wrong place? Or was it a hit arranged by the shows producers in response to the DUI arrests both actresses got minutes apart from each other?

1) Charlie: Drowned in the Looking Glass

Of all the deaths on Lost, none were felt as hard as everyone’s favorite rock star, Charlie. Desmond had a premonition that Charlie would drown; the rock star’s death would spearhead everyone’s safe rescue. When told about this vision, Charlie volunteered to swim down to the underwater Dharma station, The Looking Glass. His goal was to disable a radio jammer so Jack could call the rescue ship off shore. Charlie disabled the jammer and then learned the ship wasn’t there to save them. A barely alive Mikhail detonated a grenade that floods the room before Charlie can let anyone know. His last words were a note scribbled on his hand to Desmond, “Not Penny’s Boat.”

He overcame a nasty drug additiction, only to find a worse fate at the bottom of the ocean.

Brave sacrifices are much more tragic when they’re in vain. On the brighter side, musicians always become more famous after they die.

Tragedy seems to follow the survivors of Oceanic 815 on and off of the Island. Here are a few honorable mentions that just weren’t tragic enough:

Honorable Mention - Alex Linus: Shot by Martin Keamy
Alex was a casualty in Ben’s war with Charles Widmore. It was a raw moment when she was shot after Ben tried to play off his love for her to Keamy. You could say it’s a tragedy because her father emotionally abandoned her, but remember that Ben was the one punished.

Honorable Mention - Charlotte Lewis: Temporal Displacement
It was a combination of too much exposure to the island and time travel that killed Daniel Faraday’s love. It would be a little more tragic if anyone felt her death besides Daniel.

Honorable Mention - Michael Dawson: C4 / Exploding Freighter
Who hasn’t had a love/hate relationship with Michael? He has worked to help the survivors of Oceanic 815 just as much as he’s hurt them. Luckily for Jin, he made a noble decision to atone for his actions by sacrificing himself so that Jin could escape. Right before the ship exploded, Jack’s father appeared and told him “you can go now.” Wherever he’s going, atonement is never a tragedy. Besides he’s already in the top 5 tragic deaths… sadly as a cause.
