Every five years, it feels like the Dragon Ball Z saga finds a way of coming back into the public eye to prove once again why it is one of the top-animated action series of all time.
Recently, Funimation began the process of restoring all the original Dragon Ball Z movies uncut for DVD and Blu-Ray release. Anyone who watched DBZ back on the Cartoon Network knows what this means. The cartoon had been severely cut from its Japanese roots and great moments like Trunks peeing on Broly’s head were lost to newcomers to Dragon Ball Z fan base. Funimation used da Vinci machines to ensure that all the vibrant colors were true to the original prints when converted to HD.
The latest DBZ release from Funimation is a compilation of all three Broly feature-length movies: Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly: Second Coming, and Bio Broly.
Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan is the first and best appearance of Broly throughout the DBZ series. We learn that Broly bears a childhood grudge against the baby who was born on the same day as him – Goku. All the DBZ greats join in to try and save the Universe from this legendary threat.
Broly: Second Coming takes place on Earth seven years after the Cell Games. Goku is dead, and Gohan is now a teenager dating Mr. Satan’s daughter. When Goten and Trunks launch a scheme to collect the seven dragon balls, Goten’s crying wakes up a dormant Broly. Once again, the world must be saved from the threat of the legendary menace.
Bio Broly is the final Broly feature, and probably one of my least favorite DBZ movies. The question as to whether this is an actual Broly movie is somewhat debatable. After Broly was killed, his blood was collected to be re-engineered into a biological weapon. Instead of being the Super Saiyan with an eternal grudge against Goku and his friends, Broly is more of a biological pile of goop that launches an unstoppable attack against Trunks and Goten.
The DVD and Blu-Ray releases don’t have any special features. But, for true Dragon Ball Z fans this doesn’t matter. Funimation did the one thing fans have been begging for over the past decade. They released the Dragon Ball Z movies with the original Japanese dialogue and music score. You can also watch all three Broly features in Dolby TrueHD: English 5.1 with Japanese music. Who could ask for more? You also get the English dialogue with U.S. music, but I’ll warn you that the music does not fit in with the movies and your best bet is to go with the Japanese score.
The Dragon Ball Z Broly Triple Feature is recommended for all Dragon Ball Z fans and action cartoon fans. This is an excellent value since all three Broly features have been upgraded with the Japanese music coupled with original dialogue and score.
