There’s only one more episode left of the United States of Tara. Now, that Marshall’s gone all anti-depressant over T’s lip-lock with Jason, Tara’s decided to take the next step in alter therapy. Tara institutionalizes herself and takes Max along for the ride. Unfortunately, Max isn’t really into the whole group therapy thing and plays the silent recluse in his therapy sessions.
Let me just say that I just adore John Corbett. Sure, most women adore him from his role on Sex in the City. But, he really proves his worth in United States of Tara. When Max demeans Tara’s new doctor, Dr. Holden, Max says, “I thought this guy was the sh!t.” I nearly died from Corbett’s straight man delivery.
Dr. Holden tries in vain to learn the secrets behind Tara’s past through hypnosis. But, her defensive alters unleash Buck to defend Tara’s buried secrets. Before driving Max away from therapy, we did learn that there’s something about snow that brings a smile to Tara’s face. So, maybe something in Tara’s past that spearheaded the alters has to do with weather or the change in seasons.
Tara’s not the only one going through therapy. Charmaine’s going through her own therapy. She’s got new boobs, but the question remains is she truly happy. While, watching the children in Tara and Max’s absence, Charmaine invites her new love interest over for some late night sexcapades. One night however, ex-flame Neil shows up with some popcorn and a taste for Lost. When he leaves, Neil confronts Charmaine, bluntly stating that their relationship wasn’t just about the sex. As far as we can tell, deep down Charmaine feels the same way. Neil definitely appears to be the nice guy that Charmaine should go for. He may be short, but hey, he loved her boobs just the way they were.
Tara’s decided to confront the demons of her past. Will this bode well for Tara? Dr. Holden said that learning what caused D.I.D. can lead to a cure, but another patient said that her alters only stayed hidden for a short time. The truth is with a second season on the way, there’s no doubt that Tara’s alters will return. And, I for one wouldn’t trade that for the world or a corrected boob job.

With Max and Dr. Holden’s help, Tara meets face-to-face with an important person from her past. This meeting, while difficult, leaves Tara feeling conciliatory and expansive. Marshall finally reconciles with Tara and gives her his full support.
The family, now reunited for the first time since Tara checked into the hospita, decides to partake in a family tradition - bowling. But as Tara looks around at her family, she realizes she’s not who she is in spite of her alters, but because of them.
