Not only is Mickey Rourke joining the cast of Iron Man 2, but Scarlett Johansson is too. ScarJo is set to play Black Widow, replacing former frontrunner Emily Blunt.
Blunt reportedly was forced to drop out of the project to film Twentieth Century Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels, which sucks because I thought that she was a much better fit for the movie than Joahannson.
Not to diss Scarlett’s acting ability, but I don’t think that she’s a good fit for this role. Too many of her performances are stiff and stoic (excluding her charming turn in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona). I just can’t really see her as a butt-kicking villain.
I’m also getting a little worried about the number of characters in IM2 and the sheet star power of the cast. The first film worked because Robert Downey, Jr. got most of the screen time with great support by Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The sequel now has two villains with Mickey Rourke as Whiplash and ScarJo as Black Widow. Throw in Don Cheadle as Col. Rhodes, Sam Rockwell and an increased role by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and you have too many stars vying for precious screen time.
