Who killed Jenny Schecter? Ever since the first promo for the series finale of the L Word hit the Internet, we’ve been wondering who killed Jenny. Now that the series finale has come and gone, we’ve been left with our hands dangling up in the air in frustration. Why? Because know one truly knows who the f^#k killed Jenny.
There was a time when nice-and-neat “all questions resolved, all plot lines concluded” series finales became cliché. Life doesn’t end neatly. There is always confusion. And, writers wanted to imitate life. The scribes switched up to more ambiguous endings; ones where the viewer was allowed to draw his/her own conclusion. But, unlike your classic Hemingway story, filled with metaphors and enough subtext to draw a definitive conclusion, TV writers have always come up short on the ambiguous ending.
Nowadays, even the unanswered ending is cliché. We saw it in the Sopranos. Did Tony really die at the conclusion of the series. Sure, everything from the the way he woke up from a coffin like sleep, to the Members Only jacket to the way they all ate the onion rings implied death. But, at the end of the day, if we didn’t see it - it didn’t really happen.
The L Word joins the litany of ambiguously ended TV shows. Outside of possibly learning the truth from the L Word spinoff we’ll never have a satisfying answer that happened within our Sunday night respite.
We can walk away in disillusion assuming Bette was the killer. Bette was the last one with Jenny before she died. She was the first to jump up when Alice comes into the viewing room crying about Jenny. Her body posture also sits to the far side of the couch instead of close to Tina.
Speaking of Tina, after she discovered Jenny was behind the stealing of Lez Girls the movie, she rushes out the same door that Alice comes in through to the pool area. How did she not see Jenny? Tina was the only one of Lez Girls who no one really suspected would kill Jenny. But, a moment of temporary insanity could have pushed her over the edge. It is just after this scene that Tina goes to Bette asking for Jenny, to which Bette lies saying she hasn’t seen her. So again, the blame is thrown back at Bette.
However, the first moment we know Jenny is dead is in the scene that comes shortly after. We see the dog sniffing at the pool where Schecter’s body presumably is. So, we still can’t be one-hundred percent in our knowledge that Jenny died after talking to Bette. Several things “could have happened” between the time Bette spoke with Jenny and when her dog spotted the body.
On a tangent note, what was with Nikki crouching in the bushes? That was just random. How long was she there and what did she see? Does it matter? The real question was what the hell was she doing there in the first place.
At least the writers of The L Word kept one question clear. Did Jenny commit suicide? The answer is no.
During Alice’s final interrogation scene, she says, “What does this have to do with who killed Jenny?” To which the police rebut, “So you think someone killed Jenny?” This implies that this tight knit group of girls must have claimed Jenny’s death was an accident or a suicide.
In earnest, I kind of get where the writers were going on this. If the girls were going to keep the secret of Jenny’s murder from the authorities, then they would keep it from their loyal viewers as well. However, Nikki is not one of the girls. And, leaving her inside the series finale makes us wonder what did Nikki see to be hiding in the bushes for so long? She knows the answer and she has no loyalties except maybe to Shane. Could that be the reason the truth didn’t come out of Nikki? Maybe, it was Shane. Alas, the overarching theme of could-be possibilities is overwhelmingly frustrating.
On the positive side, the lead in to the finale has been one amazing ride. And, I wholeheartedly enjoyed every minute of it. Shane’s discovery of Jenny’s lies reinforces the bond between the girls, and why they would never sell one another out. Six seasons in The L Word is over. And, saying goodbye has never been more difficult. The L Word starts and ends with Jenny. Our last memory of Jenny is the going away video she benevolently made for Tina and Bette. And that’s how the viewers and Lez Girls will remember her. As Bette said in her interrogation, Jenny is complex. But, she did have her heart. As to who stole the final beating moments of that heart, sadly we will never know.

i think the fucking nikki was the only one who
killed lovely jenny…
she so devil..FUCK YOU NIKKI
i think the last season of l word finale is
unfair bcoz the producer and the director was so totally unfair to all viewers and they dont care about the end of the whole story..
its jenny schecter guys…so why dont they end this story about who killed jenny??i love jenny so much
even shes so devil..
i hope theres a season 7 of this interesting story…
i would like to watched again and again..
xoxo..
shane..
I worked in L.a. center where I have been honoured to meet one of the actress in “L word”.And also I promissed to her that Iwon’t say her identity.anyway,Jenny …Jenny committed suicide!
that’s the way it Ends!It was the only way that L word could be ended, cause as you remember,Jenny brought us to this place at first with her boyfriend Tim…
And No one killed Jenny…If you took a better look on her chatacter through all episodes, you will discover the trought!
I’m so upset I didn’t get to see the final show of the L Word. I began to truly fall in love with some of the characters…I had a kissed a girl crush on shane. That was one hot bitch! And I don’t like AG’s. I would have made Tina my baby momma too. I like Tasha and Alice as a couple. Papi from a while back was a sexy latin mommie…those sexy as lips. Oh, I can’t forget shanes would have been wifey, the D.J. chick….with the lower back tatoo that curls around her waist. I will trully miss the show. It.had some of the best sex on tv. And even though I didn’t see the end. I think that Jenny probably over dose on drugs. You know tv land it could have been off screen. She didn’t so much shit to her friends, it all was most likely tied to secret drug use. Ooh, and she shot up in her pussy so there would be no visible tracks. Or maybe she has faked her death to get bitches off her back. And she had the girl in the bushes taping the shit to be used as a basis for some of her future books and movies…maybe a screen play. Which she will use under an assumed name .Just thinking! Jenny is not dead and had the girl in the bush working with her in order to blackmail evryone.
Im so agreeing with Neisha,
followed this for a long time and the last episode just sucked as hell. Confusing and all, bad ending.
the end song is have you seen that girl by lee ann womack
I think L word Finale speaks about that not everything is what It seems. Can be that Bette did cheated on Tina just as Shecter lied about the films and Dylan deceipt Helena. Sure we saw Bette picking up the glasses but it was not a scene without camera cuts.
I do not know why Xena wouldn’t have a CSI team or at least guys from Law and Order…maybe it was not necessary. Their smiles at the final scene are kinda weird and made me thought they all killed her, but then Jenny comes into the scene and takes Bette and Alice’s hand. Might mean that they both were accomplices on her murder.
I liked this article a lot it is very analytic and objective and also the comment about “plot lines not concluded”, just as real life is. Besides I believe that since 3rd season fans should have learned that Ilene Chaiken is not precisely a fan of happy fairy tales endings.
one of my friends told me that Alice killed jenny. She told me the reason why but I forget now. anyways if anyone knows the name of the song at the and of season 8 please tell me, im trying to figure out.
I was terribly frsutrated with the series end. Even beyond Jenny, there were no ending answers to where Jamie would go, what will happen to Dylan and if Kit would should Tina or Bette the video. I understand that art imitates life, but there were too many open ends.
After watching the show loyally for years, I’m actaully very disappointed in how the writers and producers left us.
My opinion? Jenny committed suicide. She knew everyone hated her and she never screamed.
Ugh. Frustrating.
Did love it while it lasted.
