This Sunday night, many male significant others will lose control of the family TV as the debut of the third season of E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs. Meanwhile, their wives/girlfriends will indulge in the vapidity of this guilty-pleasure of a show.
And that’s how the line is drawn for the viewer of this show: you either love it or hate it. Many will immediately ask the question as to why this family is famous and why they deserve a show. Others can’t get enough of the infamous Kim and love seeing a family (albeit a rich one) live together and deal with everyday (rich people) issues.
And this season promises more drama than ever as the sisters bicker over who is more popular and who is the most successful at making a name for themselves. Kim’s younger sister Khloe starts the season off by facing jail time as a result of her DUI arrest, the silliest part of which is the fact that she’s being put in the slammer due to a missed probation meeting (and that’s missed because she went on an overseas vacation). The first episode also features a remorseful Kris finding herself feeling guilty for divorcing her ex-husband, the late Ron Kardashian (member of the OJ Simpson legal team).
KUWTK wouldn’t be so bad if producers presented the girls less as spoiled, whiny fame-hungry rich kids and more as imperfect-striving-to-be-better sisters. And this approach is especially risky in light of the economic meltdown that our country is in. But to each his own, the show has made it so far as to get a third season, so it must be doing something right.
