The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Universal’s upcoming new turn on the Robin Hood story will feature Academy Award winning actress Cate Blanchett. The seasoned thesp will be playing none other than Robin Hood’s main squeeze, Maid Marian. Robin of Loxley will be played by Russell Crowe.

The Ridley Scott directed film has seen some changes before its gotten to the production stage. It was formerly to be know as “Nottingham.” Also, actress Sienna Miller was attached at some point (to play Marian), but she dropped out last year.

At this point, it’s expected that the movie will be an origin story, telling its own version of the classic tale. The reported budget of the film is $130 million and a large portion of it will be filmed in London. Production starts in April.

Scott has a thing for working with Crowe and the two do a pretty good job when they team up. I mean good as in awesome. Scott directed Crowe’s Oscar winning effort in Gladiator. He’s also worked with him on American Gangster and Body of Lies. It will be great to see another version of Robin Hood to add to the collection. My favorites still remain Kevin Costner’s turn in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and, of couse, Mel Brook’s “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”
