For many, the season opener to “Battlestar Galactica: the Final Episodes” was lukewarm at best. Not much happened in the way of drama. We witnessed a few probable revelations that didn’t stir emotion - like Saul’s wife being the final Cylon.
There were, however, the few that trusted David Eick and Ronald Moore; the creative duo had to be laying the seeds for something bigger. In episode 15, “The Oath,” our faith paid off. Battlestar is back. And the revolution is on.
The marines have turned on Admiral Adama, leaving Gaeta at the helm of the Galactica. Despite appearing to be in charge, Gaeta still remains just a loyal follower who loves having his strings pulled. His thirst to be the number-two guy behind every fly-by-night leader from Gaius to Zarek has made him the sworn enemy of Battlestar fans.
President Roslin has decided to come out of her post-prophecy depression and take charge as President. Too little. Too late.
We haven’t seen much of Gaius since the Final Episodes began, but he shows up in “The Oath.” Baltar is back to being all about self-preservation. But he still has a heart. Roslin and Baltar admit to being co-frauds when it comes to religion. And, Roslin’s admission prompts Gaius to help her communicate with the entire fleet via wi-fi.
In a final show of loyalty to the Admiral, Tyrol helps get the President and Gaius Baltar off the Battlestar.
This episode really got a jump-start when Starbuck shows up to rescue Lee. She puts a bullet in two marines, as the two stage a small front to find the Admiral. But, that wasn’t the only show of weapons prowess. When Adama and Saul are escorted to the brig by two marines, Adama gets old school all over their asses, taking their guns and killing one of his two captors.
“The Oath” was an episode heavy on guns and plot depth. Eick and Moore explored the varying aspects of loyalty. Gaeta still remains conflicted as to whether he made the right decision. The President decides to take the mantle up once again realizing she made a promise to the people, and Zarek threatened that promise. And of course Admiral Adama challenges the marines who have betrayed their oath to protect the Galactica.
