At this point in Pixar’s history, the release of a new feature film is not a case of if it will be good, but where it will rank in their library of hits. And frankly, I’m starting to believe that, no matter how skeptical I am of their movies, I should give them the benefit of the doubt.
Some of their movies are obvious winners, like Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Cars. But on the contrary, the ones that I was most skeptical after seeing their teaser trailers turned out to be the my favorites. The Incredibles looked like bad comedy in the teaser with Mr. Incredible trying to fit into his tights. The end result? My favorite Pixar movie to date. Wall-E? A tale about an abandoned Earth and a robot that barely speaks? I expected their run of classics to end, but Wall-E earned the most critical acclaim of any one of the studio’s hits to date.
In 2009, Pixar will release Up, yet another movie I meet with optimistic skepticism. It tells the story of Carl Fredricksen, a 78 year old grumpy man that has always been a dreamer and not a doer. He teams up with an unlikely partner, 8 year-old Russell, who joins him on an amazing adventure.
Here’s a quick look at a teaser poster for the film, featuring Carl, Russell and their impromptu adventure vehicle, Carl’s house.
