Showtime may just have another hit on its hands. Created by Diablo Cody “United States of Tara” debuted with just under 900,000 viewers (880,000 thousand to be exact), according to Showtime.

us_tara_1011That makes USOT the most viewed debut of a Showtime original series, besting favorites like “The Tudors,” “Weeds,” and, yes, even “Dexter.” But don’t think that those shows didn’t have anything to do with USOT’s success; viewers are starting to realize that the cable network has thrown down the gauntlet against rival HBO.

Including On Demand viewing, Tara attracted 1.5M viewers through its premiere night, second only to The Tudors, Season One. With streamed views online projected to exceed 1M, Tara was seen by more than 2.5M viewers through its premiere night.

USOT wasn’t the only hit for Showtime. The season six premiere of The L Word had its strongest performance in years. Viewership was up 44% over last year’s 9PM premiere and 82% over last year’s 9PM finale. The sixth and final season of The L Word ranks 2nd among all previous season premieres of the show (second only to the series premiere in 2004).

The second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl picked up where it left off in its first season. The premiere was up 7% over last year’s 10:30PM finale and up 8% vs. the season 1 finale night. The Billie Piper led show retained 63% of the Tara lead-in.

“Tara” stars Toni Collette as a mother with Dissociative Identity Disorder, a condition that makes her display 3 other very distinct personalities. You can catch it on Showtime on Sundays at 10PM ET/PT.
