2009 is the year of Street Fighter for more reasons than just a sleek updated title (if you haven’t checked out the trailer for Street Fighter IV you don’t know what you’re missing). There’s also a new Street Fighter movie coming out right around the time of the game’s release.
If you’re paralyzed with fear beyond belief for another potentially disastrous Jean Claude Van Damme style movie, you’re not alone.
Street Fighter developed a legendary following from its 2D game, and also claimed similar accolades from its Manga style animated movie and series. But, its one venture into feature film was marred by a terrible script coupled with even worse acting.
The latest Street Fighter movie is more of an origins story called Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. It featuring Smallville veteran star Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li. So, If you wondered why Kreuk gave up an ongoing role on Smallville during its final season, well there’s your answer.
Her nemesis will be Neal McDonough, who plays Bison, and none other than and veteran comic movie villain Michael Clarke Duncan who will star as the Mike Tyson rip-off character Balrog. Well if anyone can breathe life into nothing it’s Duncan who’s Green Mile performance still resonates in the hearts of any movie goer. Expect Vega to also make a quick appearance.
Kreuk recently returned to the world of Smallville as Lana Lang for her friend Chloe’s wedding. She obviously wanted to tote some of her new Street Fighter martial arts prowess, as her first appearance this season involved a very un-stellar fight scene between Lana and the Green Arrow.
