Ok, so we’ve had a week to digest the 4 hour 24 season premiere feast and now that we’re back to the one hour every 7 days diet, does show still pack enough calories to keep things juicy and satisfying?

Tonight was another great ride in 24-land and the impossible choices were good and plenty. As usual, life and death for many people swung in the balance as the bad guys continue to have their way with the FBI and the new President.

Jack and Tony are still undercover, doing their best to hang tough until they can get into handshake range of Dubaku. But Matobo still is their only in and he’s bunkered in the panic room with his wife. Jack’s solution is to come up with an asphyxiating concoction and smoke them out. Of course, Jack’s science experiment works wonders and now it’s time to make tracks straight for Dubaku.

Only that pesky agent Renee Walker arrives on the scene and gets captured right as Jack and friends are about to make their getaway. And not only is Walker’s life in danger now, but her career is as well. Back at the FBI station, the Attorney General’s office is ready to lay the smack down on her for torturing Tanner into giving up the 411 on Matobo.

Meanwhile, the First Gentleman is getting into some trouble of his own. In another telegraphed double-crossing, Secret Service Agent Brian reveals himself as a traitor. Not only is he setting up his boss to be framed for killing Samantha, but he also is shown to be the one that said auf wiedersehen to the First Son. Not cool man. He paralyzes the First Gentleman using a secretly placed chemical in his latte.

And our new friends in the FBI are doing their best to show us that they’re interesting characters. Larry Moss is going ape as he learns that Agent Walker is kidnapped and potentially dead. Sean makes it apparent that he had a fling (or something like that) with Erica, another analyst. And Janis is finding herself under heat from the Attourney General as the only witness to Agent Walker’s cruel torture tactics last week.

Back to Jack, he gets the unenviable task of having to “kill” Agent Walker to prove his loyalty. But she’s no Ryan Chappelle; Jack doesn’t kill her, he only makes it appear like he did. To make things worse, Jack and Tony are forced to bury Walker right as the clock struck 1PM, generating a silent clock. The only sound you could hear was Walker breathing. Will she die right there in that pit or live to see another day. The only thing I have to say is “Shame on You” if you think the former will come true.

So far, I’m digging this season. Let’s face it, the “Tony is a bad guy” red herring was a stinky fish that we all knew was going to be a farce. And if you’re mad that the show doesn’t allocate enough time to the Jack and Tony show, it’s because the writers are in full character development mode for the large number of periphery people they added this season. I’m a little pissed that we didn’t see Bill and Chloe at all, but expect things to heat up again very soon.
