It’s pretty easy to forget that Queen Latifah has an Oscar nod under her belt when the films she’s chosen since that magical turn in 2002’s Chicago include Taxi, Mad Money and Last Holiday, which releases today on Blu ray disc.
Don’t get me wrong, Latifah actually works well as the centerpiece to this movie, but the film itself falls victim to all sorts of pitfalls, including a predictability factor that made it hardly worth watching.
Last Holiday is actually a remake of the 1950 movie of the same name with legend Alec Guinness in the lead role. Latifah plays Georgia Byrd (Guiness was George Bird), a woman who finds out that she has to get an operation she can’t afford or die in less than a month. So instead of letting survival instincts kick in and find any possible way to fund the operation, Georgia decides to pull all her life savings out and live life to the fullest for the next 30 days. I’m not ruining anything by letting you know that she was misdiagnosed, it’s pretty easy to figure out where the movie is going relatively quickly.
The Blu ray showcases a handsome 1080p Hi-def version of the film, while the special features were ported over from the standard DVD released over 2 years ago. By the way, all of the features (excluding the film’s theatrical trailer) are presented in non HD format.
As part of the deal, you get 2 deleted scenes and three behind-the-scenes featurettes that will give you some history on how the film was remade and how the part was rewritten for Queen Latifah. You’ll also get some insight into the production of the movie and how it was brought together.
