Out on Blu-ray is the quintessential ‘chick-flick’ and supernatural love story, “Ghost.” Chances are most people that love this movie already have it on DVD. So is it worth the plunge and incremental cost for the hi-def version?
Ghost is the heartfelt and romantic love story of what happens after Sam (Patrick Swayze) is murdered and finds out that his killing was not a random crime, but a heinous act carried out by his best friend. Sam remains on Earth as a ghost and wants to reconnect with his love Molly (Demi Moore) to warn her of impending danger. To do so, he enlists the help of psychic Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg).
To say that Ghost became a phenomenon when it was released in the summer of 1990 is an understatement. Before it theatrical run came to an end, it took in half a billion dollars in box office receipts. And subsequently, it garnered 5 Academy Award nominations and two wins for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Goldberg, which was her role of a lifetime.
Blu-Ray features
The movie translated well to Blu-ray, with very little discernable degradation over the years to this print of the film. I also found the audio to be quite good, fully utilizing the 5.1 Dolby format.
With respect to content, there’s nothing new in the Blu-ray compared to the 2-Disc Special Collector’s Edition DVD that hit store shelves a few years ago. With the price of admission you get to watch the film with commentary from Director Jerry Zucker and screenplay writer Bruce Joel Rubin. There’s also a handful of featurettes that show how the movie was made, breakdown the film’s infamous love scene and give a little 101 lesson on the paranormal. Lastly, there’s a photo gallery and the film’s theatrical trailer in HD.
Despite being almost 19 years old, Ghost stills stands the test of time and looks better than ever in Blu-ray format.
