Season One of The Secret Life of the American Teenager is coming to DVD, packed with all the drama and angst of the first 11 episodes including a Bonus Feature: On Set.

shailene woodley amy juergensTake six stereotypical teenagers, put them together at Ulysses S. Grant High School, and you get The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The characters and their problems typify modern-day high school life: the good-girl band geek who naively gets pregnant, the jock, the Christian cheerleader, the school slut, the player (the father of the baby) and every young girl’s dream, the knight in shining armor.

This poignant portrait of today’s high school, accurately tackles issues facing teens today, pregnancy, sexual promiscuity, single parents, overbearing parents, divorce, Alzheimer’s and marriage. The first season laid down the Secret Life groundwork, setting up the characters for emotional and physical changes. We’ve been left with many unanswered questions: Will Amy keep the baby? Will she marry Ben? Will her parents get divorced? Will Ricky and Grace really get together? Will Adrienne’s father remain in her life? I know that Molly Ringwald, who I interviewed briefly at the ABC Family “25 Days of Christmas” event, is looking forward to the growth of her character in the coming season.

One of my favorite moments in the season comes in Episode 5, “What Have You Done To Me?” I know she’s pregnant, but I like a girl who will eat in front of a man. She lifts up the whole plate of chicken wings and asks him, “where’re yours?”!! And, in spite of everything, she’s in a good mood, “I don’t know why I am but I am.” I love that feeling of being in a good mood just being with the person you’re with.

The only disappointment is the lack of special features. The only one included in this 3-Disc set is a brief behind the scenes view of the show. “On Set” includes short interviews with the cast, the writer and a couple of short outtakes. Not enough extras to help me get through until next season!

I think this DVD will make a great belated Xmas present, or for anyone who got a dvd/bluray player for a present and needs something to watch on it.

I’m really excited to see the next season, which is coming back on the 5th… I agree about the writing, you do feel like you’re there, and I want to see what happens now that Amy is coming along in her pregnancy a bit!

Is this what high schools were like - say, in the 80s? Is this an accurate picture of what high schools are like today?? Scary….. But it was great writing. Made me feel I was there.
