Releasing on Blu ray disc this week is 2003’s Old School, the college comedy starring Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn
It’s almost 6 years after the film’s release and it’s still good for a decent serving of laughs to this day. Now for the part where I act like you haven’t seen the movie: Old School features Wilson as Mitch Martin, a working stiff who’s life is turned upside down when he finds out his girl has a freaky side. Forced to figure out a new way to live life, Mitch is persuaded by childhood friends Frank (Will Ferrell) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) to open a frat house. What ensues is a journey for all three, as they struggle to actually grow up from their childish tendencies.
Now the unrated version is 1 minute longer than the theatrical version due to some tucked in nudity scenes; a requisite for all college comedies.
The Blu-Ray itself comes with a 1080p Hi-Def version of the film, the only distinguishing feature from the standard DVD version. Everything else is a direct translation feature-wise - the only reason to upgrade to the Blu-Ray version is to show off that new player that you’re going to get for Christmas.
Die hard fans of the film will appreciate some of its added sides:
Feature Commentary: The commentary, which features the main trio and Director Todd Phillips providing some cool tidbits about the making of the movie, especially about how the stars improvised during the shooting.
Old School Orientation: I get what they were aiming for with this one, but it comes across as self-important.
From the Cutting Room Floor: Some scenes that didn’t make it to the final print.
Theatrical Trailer in Hi-Def: I don’t know about you, but trailers seem to age even faster than movies.
Inside The Actor’s Studio Spoof: Old School was proof that Will Ferrell could be funny outside Saturday Night Live and this feature is probably the best on the disc. Ferrell as James Liption interviewing himself, Wilson, Vaughn and Phillilps felt like one of those SNL skits that you actually found funny.
Outtakes & Bloopers: Worth a once-over - this will give you a chuckle or two.
TV Spots - A few different versions of the promos that aired for the movie.
If you already own the movie on DVD, there’s nothing new on the Blu ray. Only choose the upgrade if you’re swapping out DVDs for the hi-def version.
