Out on DVD after airing last year as a TV Special is “Shrek The Halls.” Between the Grinch, Scrooge, and all of those haters that didn’t want to give Ralphie his Red Ryder B.B. gun in A Christmas Story, there’s hardly room for yet another character that doesn’t appreciate holiday spirit. But I’m willing to make an exception for Shrek, who is, well, an ogre. And last time I checked, ogres don’t celebrate Christmas.

When Fiona and Donkey express their excitement for a great Christmas, Shrek begins an impromptu journey to deliver just that. The problem is that our favorite ogre is taking his cues from a “Christmas for Village Idiots” book.

Shrek the Halls features more of the same style of humor featured in the trilogy. If you’re a fan of those movies (as I am), you’ll certainly appreciate the holiday spin on your favorite characters. And let’s face it, no one wants to be serious during the holidays and this movie doesn’t go lean on the campy and predictable story.

But none of that takes away from the movie as it has just the right mix of supporting characters to keep the jokes rolling in quick-fast. And the best part is that this TV movie is seamless in terms of the viewing experience of the films: the main cast is back including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas. As for the visuals and sound, there is no discernible difference in quality.

With this DVD you’ll get some kid-focused (lukewarm for adults) features that you didn’t see when Fox aired this TV Special almost a year ago:

-The Twelve Days of Christmas Sing Along—Join along and watch the entire Madagascar gang as they celebrate the holidays in style with their own take on the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” Sing along to the Madagascar-inspired lyrics, including “lemurs leaping, foosas fussing and a penguin who made a loud squeak!” In classic sing-along style, the words appear on screen as the characters perform.
-Deck The Halls Sing Along—“Deck the halls, it’s time to party.” This is your chance to sing along with everyone’s favorite Penguins from Madagascar. Join Skipper, Private and Kowalski for their version of the classic holiday song as they get into the spirit of the season.
-Gingy’s Dunking Game—Test your skills at being a master baker and make sure you have plenty of flour as you try to match the Gingerbread cookies that come out of the oven with the Gingy that appears on screen.
