It’s official folks, Hollywood is out of ideas. Columbia Pictures will remake one of my most beloved movies, The Karate Kid, and has picked Will Smith’s son Jaden (Pursuit of Happyness) to star in it.
This is messed up on so many levels, it pains me to write about it. My gripes:
Some will call it cheesy, some will call it a classic. Either way, it’s a masterpiece by current standards and is legitimized by Pat Morita’s Oscar nomination
-Producer Jerry Weintraub is developing this. He actually was a producer on the original films. Can he look himself in
-It’s set in China. What happened to Jersey kid goes to California for success?
-Classic moments and lines that made the first film will never be captured by a lens again. The crane kick anyone? Sweep the leg? The teary eyed shot of a proud Mr. Miyagi?
-Speaking of which, who could possibly play the Mr. Miyagi mentor role? Pat Morita unfortunately passed away 3 years ago.
Of course, it’s ultimately your choice as a consumer to see it. But every so often Hollywood is so overt in its desire to milk storied franchises that consumers (including myself) are turned off to what they’re selling. The worst part of this is knowing that the current generation will actually think say “Pat Morita who?” when the film is referenced. So sad.
