If there’s one word that isn’t synonymous with Star Trek it’s “cool.” Maybe it was the slew of catastrophically bad movies from the franchise, or just trekees who took their Space dreams a little too seriously. Regardless, the rest of the world could care less about Star Trek.

In the Oct 17. issue of Entertainment Weekly, director J.J. Abrams and cast members from the new movie speak out about rekindling Star Trek fan favor.

“I don’t think people even understand what Star Trek means anymore,” says Abrams. Isn’t that the truth. After Deep Space 9, Star Trek just became a distant memory. The one time phenomena lost its crowd to newer sci-fi stories from Stargate to Firefly.

Both Abrams and Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, believe Star Trek can still serve as the conscience of society. Let’s not forget the first attempt at an televised interracial kiss on the original series.

“I think a movie that shows people of various races working together and surviving hundreds of years from now is not a bad message to put out right now,” says Abrams.

Quinto followed it up with a quick quip, “This is a franchise that offers hope for unity — and so does Barack Obama… When this movie comes out, and Obama is president, hopefully there will be some parallels.”

Original Spock legend Leonard Nimoy added, “My only regret is that the movie can’t come out sooner… I think the world could use it. Don’t you?”

Only time will tell if this new Star Trek movie will save the franchise. But, as of now, the interest in seeing it has been lukewarm at best.
