Smallville’s eighth season continues tonight with “Plastique.”
On his first day at the Daily Planet, Clark and Lois are immediately thrown together on a story when a bus explodes outside the office; Clark rescues Bette, a young girl hiding a big secret; Davis Bloome, a paramedic, is drawn to Chloe.

So, I’m not sure if I’ll go so far as to say that the new direction of Smallville post Al Gough and Miles Millar has become a recycled-lackluster mess. But after seeing the start of “Plastique,” it definitely crossed my mind. How did Clark and his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor become friends? He rescued Lex from a wrecked car. How does Clark meet Lex’s replacement at Luthor-Corp, Tess Mercer? He pulls her out of a wrecked bus. I don’t know about you, but it sure does sound pretty familiar to me.
Speaking of Luthor-Corp CEOs, I’ve got a quick quandary on corporate operations. Since when does becoming the interim-CEO of a company mean you get to sleep in the missing CEO’s bed? Is that something reserved for Metropolis based companies, or does it also work for your Washington Mutuals and Lehman Brothers?
This wasn’t an inheritance, so what gives Tess the right to camp-out in the Luthor mansion?
It just seems like after two episodes this whole season is already coming off way too forced. We’re back to meteor-rock empowered pyromaniacs. Not to mention being the mad rush to establish an overarching plot that doesn’t involve Luthors. Being this is the closing season, I just have to say, “Shame on you Rosenbaum, Gough and Miller for abandoning us in the final hours.”
You know what though? DC Comics has been proclaiming that the “Blackest Night” will take place in 2009. Maybe the “Blackest Night” has nothing to do with Green Lantern or comic books at all. Maybe the “Blackest Night” will be that Thursday in 2009, where every Smallville fan will ban together in a proud boycott of the series finale.
On a positive note, you’ve got to love a nice throwback to classic Superman lore. When Clark arrives at the Daily Planet, Lois promptly throws him into a phone booth to switch out of his flannel attire into something a little more corporate.
Add on top of that the elation that coursed through my spine when Tess said, “I remember what it was like to be your age. Alone. Angry. Trapped. The injustice of it all.”
You know what that reference means? The Injustice League is coming. The Martian Manhunter-less JLA had better prepare themselves.
See you next Thursday for another all-new Smallville.

I DO NOT MISS LANA! But the Luthors I Can’t live without. This is total BS. Once Lionel was gone I was pissed. But i figured hell Lex is the villain of the story right. So yeah he should be the focus villain. Then he jumps ship?? BS
I could care less if Lois winks at Clark. We all know that CAN’T go anywhere. Just because of the story. So why even pretend.
What we really need is a fuckin Luthor. Or they should have at least introduced other mainstream villains besides brainiac if gough miller knew they would jump ship. i think this sucks.
they really should have done some consultation and laid more seeds for the final season knowing they were going to leave.
and why isn’t cyborg or flash back with the group. who really cares about aquaman? This is crap. I’ll still watch. But its still CRAP.,
It’s definitely not clear if the new direction can carry the Millar and Gough mantle. But I will say this: the show has started weak before and then pleasantly surprised me. Season 3 - Lex going crazy whilst exiled on that island, anyone? One of the most laughable segments of the show followed by what was a great season.
Ha and ironically befitting your point on recycling, it appears we’re headed back to an island next week for a little Green Arrow origin story action.
Agreed. I feel cheated. I slaved over this show for years through meteor-freak-of-the-week episodes just to get to those last 10 minutes in the end that actually moved the plot. We were all waiting for the reveal of Lex knowing Clark’s secret and it comes in the last 2 minutes of Rosenbaum’s final episode! That’s @$@$# up!
The Clark / Lois thing is so forced and, quite frankly, almost makes me miss Lana. ALMOST. I really don’t know what could save this season after the show losing its 2 BEST actors (Rosenbaum and Glover). Even Clark flying will seem like a shock-value ratings gimmick at this point. I would’ve never thought that it would end like this.
