It’s an understatement to say that The Watchmen is one of the most anticipated upcoming movies of 2009. However, it may never see theaters.

Twentieth Century Fox has stated that it will seek an injunction to block release of the Warner Bros movie after an LA court ruled a copyright lawsuit against Warner as valid.

Fox supposedly still possesses the rights to distribute the movie. The company acquired motion picture rights of the DC Comics graphic novel back in the 1980s, but apparently relinquished some of those rights back in 1991. It contends, however, that it still holds the rights to distribute the first movie.

By no means, does this mean that Fox has won - it just allows them to continue the case. Hopefully, the movie will still see the light of day - it’s already been shot and is gearing up for a March release. There will be a lot of pissed off fans if the plug is pulled on this project.
