If you’ve been throwing up in your mouth with disgust at the state of horror films of late, you’re not the only one.

Buzzfocus caught up with Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) at the San Diego Comic Con “Mirrors” panel today, and he shared his own thoughts on the future of horror.

First let me start by telling you that “Mirrors,” starring Kiefer Sutherland and Amy Smart, has one of the most gruesome moments on film that I’ve seen in the past decade. I won’t go into details because it will ruin the impact for you. Let’s just say you’ll never look at Amy Smart the same way again.

Alex hopes that horror does not return to the slasher films of the 90s, where there was no real scaring at all. Can we still scare?

Aja simply replies, “Yes.” It’s a new challenge to get people to be frightened again. Alex hopes to take full advantage of the recent innovations to special effects and believes the new vehicle of fright will be 3-D. I wonder what Guillermo del Toro would say to that. The “Hellboy” director is firmly against anything using CG as a base.

Aja’s new film “Piranha 3-D” will be unique from “Mirrors.” The film will take full advantage of 3-D tech.

I don’t know if I can imagine “Piranha 3-D,” it sounds like a horror version of “Finding Nemo.” But, from what I’ve seen of “Mirrors” I have to admit, I like Aja’s vision of horror. At the least it’s gruesomely shocking. He’s taking a risk using 3-D as a base, but risks work sometimes. Just ask the Coen brothers.

So, I’ll be looking to see how “Piranha 3-D” plays out.
