Industry publication Variety is reporting that Universal’s exclusive choice of Toshiba’s HD-DVD format may come to an end.
On Thursday, Universal broke its silence about the matter to say that it plans to keep supporting the format for the time being, a pledge Par made earlier in the week. And in any case, U is committed to a series of HD-DVD promotions in coming months.
Given the fact that Paramount had an escape clause in their contract with Toshiba if Warner Bros. chose Blu-Ray (which it did), HD-DVD is certain to lose critical support and will go the way of the Beta-Max. Even if Universal maintains its commitment for the short term, once the general public realizes HD-DVD has lost, no one will buy discs in the format. And once that happens retailers will stop buying and… well, you know what I’m getting at.
