Billie Piper Belle Secret Diary of a Call Girl Showtime“Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” starring Billie Piper (Dr. Who) is a situational comedy about a high-class call girl leading a double life. We follow the life of a smart woman named Hannah, who poses as a legal secretary, but in reality has a career as one of London’s call girls.

The humor lies in the myriad of Belle’s sexual encounters with men from all walks of life. The documentary style delivery, similar to that of “The Office,” adds to the comedic flavor as we get Belle’s personal analysis of these men. Add to that Belle’s philosophy on fulfilling her clients personal desires, coupled with her own, and you’ve got a story that will quickly draw you in.

“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” avoids the cliche story of a women who get caught up in prostitution because of drugs or a history of parental abuse. Belle’s motivation comes from two desires: sex and money. Billie Piper is extraordinary in this role and delivers a believable character that anyone can easily relate to, even if you’re not a call girl.

The only time we get a taste of the darker side of the call girl business, is through the cinematic delivery of London as the staging ground for prostitution. The producers use very dark and drab colors for all the outdoor scenes. Top that off with a touch of graffiti to the backdrop and you’ve got a setting right out of your favorite street gang flick.

One caveat, I found, is that “Secret Diary” could benefit with a faster pace. By episode three you’ll probably be saying to yourself, “I get it. Hannah likes sex and the men in this world are depraved.” What gets overshadowed is the lives of the other people in Hannah’s life. Although the series briefly touches upon the relationship between Hannah, her best-friend Ben and her parents, their relationships are only touched upon at a superficial level.

It isn’t until episodes four and five, when Belle exposes her professional life to Ben, that you get a real taste for Secret Diary’s full depth. Unfortunately, by that time you may have decided to switch around your Monday night viewing options.

“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” is a fun and entertaining new addition to the Showtime lineup, but leave your inhibitions at the door. This series is not for the prude. But, hey, it’s cable what do you expect?

“Secret Diary of a Call Girl” premieres Monday, June 16th at 10:30 PM immediately following the fourth season premiere of “Weeds.”
