The Weinstein Company Sets Its Sights on 'The Alchemist'

laurencef-thumb.jpgThe Weinstein Company used Cannes Film Festival to announced that it intends to bring the best selling novel “The Alchemist” to the big screen. TWC owner Harvey Weinstein is set to produce. In addition, Laurence Fishburne is set to direct, produce and star in the film.

TWC has had great success adapting classic literature to film. Most notable of their successes are “The English Patient,” “Cider House Rules,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Cold Mountain.”

According to a press release, TWC is currently in negotiations with an Oscar winning writer to pen the adapted screenplay.

If you’ve never read the book, it is penned by Paulo Coelho and tells the magical story of an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found.
