What do you get when you mix five of the funniest Muslim American comedians with PBS? You get an uproarious and intelligent look at the state of Muslim American life in the U.S.

On May 10, PBS presents a new volume in its “America at a Crossroads” series, called “Stand Up: Muslim American Comics Come of Age.”

Maysoon Zayid (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan), Dean Obeidallah (SNL), Ahmed Ahmed (Iron Man), Tissa Hami and Azhar Usman (Me and the Mosque) have banded together to offer a unique look at America through the eyes of Muslim American comics.

By taking a light-hearted introspective look at their own culture and the way Arabs are perceived in America, these comedians will quickly open your eyes to the beauty of Muslim America, and simultaneously make you “laugh your ass off.”

The PBS special emphasizes “being American first, and (being) Arab by heritage.” The combination of snippets from the quintet’s individual comedy routines, the 4th Annual Arab American Comedy Festival at the Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, news reports post September 11th, and the comics’ personal experiences create an hour-long comedy show with a very serious message.

This special is a must see for anyone who wants to learn a little more about the Muslim American experience or just wants to have a good laugh on a Sunday night.

“Stand Up: Muslim American Comics Come of Age,” premieres May 10 at 10PM EST on PBS. It is produced and directed by Glenn Baker.
