On Sunday, May 4th “This American Life” returns to Showtime. The Emmy nominated series depicts real American stories with a visually dramatic and sometimes humorous perspective.
I had a chance to watch the first two episodes and I was immediately touched by the stories related in each.
Ira Glass, host of “This American Life,” creates a metaphor for life with each episode by showing the viewers a story that we would otherwise be oblivious to. Episode 1 was a story of escape, as a young man with some very special circumstances struggles to seperate from his mothers embrace.
Episode 2 really hit home with a story everyone can relate to. We all know someone who has been affected by terrorism and/or the war in the Middle East. Episode 2 relates the story of an Iraqi man who moved to America for school. The young man traveled all over America with a booth labeled “Talk to an Iraqi.” It was amazing to listen to the dialogue between the Americans and the young man.
What I found to be particularly humorous was that several Americans, who had never been to Iraq, told him about how life was in Iraq before and after the war. On top of that they claimed to know more about how Iraqi citizens felt than he did.
“This American Life” is a thought provoking series that will open up questions to dialogue about for years to come.
