Here are some costume designs from the upcoming “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” feature, directed by Guillermo del Toro.
At NY Comic Con, Guillermo shared his antipathy towards movie productions that relied too heavily on CG and fixing things in the post production process.
“I don’t hate CGI, but I hate when it’s lazy CGI. If a director that is making millions of dollars decides to take the easy route when you could have done it physically, I say F*#@ you. When the craftsmanship of things like prosthetics and animatronics that have been taken as far as we can take them technologically won’t do, then I agree let’s try something. If something is too small, too big you can’t fit a performer you cannot composite a puppet then go CG, but that should be a tool not the tool for executives changing their mind or directors not working as hard as they should.
On the costume designs and his team, Guillermo del Toro added, “According to the creature, the only thing I ask them (costume designers) is that they (monster designs) shouldn’t look like movie monster creatures. They should have a flair or a flavor that is more unique than that. If it looks like the last “Wishmaster” creature… then it’s screwed up and I reject it. Show me the one you want to do the most… Most designers have been cattle prodded into submission, by directors (to them I say) F*#@ you… Please go insane, and they (Guillermo’s designers) go completely insane.”
