Every once in a while an episode of Smallville leaves you speechless. When Pa Kent died, the world stopped. When the Justice League formed we all applauded.
And now, Lionel Luthor is dead. One of the most iconic characters to grace the world of primetime television is gone. The murderer? His own son. In one of the greatest opening sequences in Smallville history, Lex pushes his father right out of his office window in Metropolis.
The sins of the father have passed on to the next generation. Lex has taken on the mantle of the villain we all knew he would one day become. And we’ve enjoyed the ride every step of the way.
“I am the villain of this story.” The words Lex said so long ago are solidified. In a final blow to his mortal soul, Lex symbolically murders the voice of his childhood self, Alexander. He drags the only good left inside of him and tosses the boy he once was into the Luthor mansion fireplace.
As for Lionel Luthor, he will be missed. Lionel’s duplicitous character always kept us wondering, “Is he on Clark’s side or against Clark?”
And what of Clark? Every father figure in his life has ended up dead. Our farmboy is a walking cancer.
The key Lionel tried to protect by passing off to Chloe is now in the hands of the Villainous Lex Luthor. What does the key unlock? According the a message left by Lionel to Clark, in the event of Lionel’s untimely death, the key unlocks some weapon that can be used to control Clark.
Now Clark has two battles to fight. On one side Brainiac has escaped with his cousin Kara Zor-El. And on the other, Lex Luthor.
Here’s hoping that the Justice League will show up. Well… at least Flash, Cyborg, Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter. Aquaman we can all do without.
