The Spectacular Spider-Man is officially a winner for the WB. The one-hour season premiere this past Saturday was a winner with audiences new and old.
I’m breathing a sigh of relief. One would think that bringing back a time-tested hero to a new animated series would be an easy winner - no contest.
Not the case. “Transformers Animated” turned out to be a terrible new series on the Cartoon Network. An obvious case of creative staff or producers not paying attention to the minute details that made Transformers a hit in the first place. Transformers is more than just a bunch of robots in disguise. But, not everyone will get that. Which is why every new animated series has never lasted more than a couple of seasons - except maybe Armada which had its moments.
I have to hand it to the creative staff behind The Spectacular Spider-Man, they did the one thing that most people skim over in the Spider-Man mythos: they took Mary Jane Watson out of the picture, and kicked off the show with Gwen Stacy.
This is awesome. Anyone familiar with Spidey, and by familiar, I mean really familiar in that you don’t just read a bunch of facts at-random off of the Internet… knows that Gwen Stacy is just as important to the Spider-Man mythos as Uncle Ben.
Okay, they did some took some creative license in Peter Parker’s past. Eddie Brock just happens to be studying at the same science lab as Peter. But in the end… defining Parker’s persona is all about Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy’s death.
So kudos to the new creators of the Spectacular Spider-Man. This series has quickly become a mainstay in my weekly watch list. Ahhh, to be a kid again on Saturday morning.

IT WAS AWESOME!!
