Bone Jeff Smith Phoney Fone SmileyIn the past several years, Hollywood has gone bonkers for comic book and cartoon adaptations.

The latest target in Hollywood’s adaptive eyes is the indie comic book title Bone, by artist Jeff Smith. Warner Bros. has decided to make a run at bringing the offbeat series to the silver screen.

Smith’s Bone series were released from 1991 to 2004, with a total of 55 issues. The fantasy series featured the Bone Family; small, white bald humanoids with big noses and little clothing.

The Bones featured the greedy Phoncible P. “Phoney” Bone, the goofy, cigar-smoking Smiley Bone, and Fone Bone. When Phoney makes a poor attempt at running for mayor, the trio gets run out of their hometown. They are eventually taken in by a girl named Thorne and her grandmother.

No word yet on whether Bone will be animated or live-action. Of late live-action with some CG has been the way to go, but with the Bone series, animation of Pixar quality may be best.

Unfortunately, an animated adaption was attempted by Nickelodeon Films before. Jeff Smith walked from the project when Nickelodeon tried to make a mockery of Bone, and have the film riddled with pop songs.
