A Fourth Jason Bourne Movie on the Way?

bourne-ult-poster-big.jpgI once heard Matt Damon joke during an interview that if there was a fourth movie from the Bourne franchise, it would be called “The Bourne Redundancy.” Safe to say, he and most other people wrote off there ever being a fourth installment. However, despite prior skepticism, it appears a fourth movie is in fact going to happen.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has green lighted another movie, starring Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon. The film will also be directed by Paul Greengrass, who wonderfully spun two of the first three films (Supremacy and Ultimatum).

I’m not sure how I feel about this one. Those three movies are about as perfect as a trilogy can get. In a world where 3-parters are now released all the time and are typically known for diminishing quality, the Bourne movies actually got better with each turn, culminating with the masterpiece of The Bourne Ultimatum. Should Damon and Greengrass risk tampering with that legacy or can they really crank out another high-octane thriller? Where would the 4th movie sit in the story arc of the previous movies. Perhaps it would be a prequel to explain everything that started in Identity?

I meet this news with cautious optimism. If anything, they could just make a great action movie and not mess too much with the legacy.

There’s no word yet on when the movie will be written or produced.

The fourth movie, “Bourne Legacy” releases Jack Webb from the constricts of looking for “truth” and the mystery surrounding a corrupted rouge US intelligence operation. He leaves “Ultimatum” with a new high ranking CIA connection [Pamela Landy] and a personal life (love) to chase [Nicky Parsons].
As with all Legacy ideas, the hero wants to leave a lasting memory of good deeds. So the good David Webb working as an outsider operative of Pam Landy’s cleaned up CIA proceeds to secret super-hero deeds: eliminating - drug trafficers; arms dealers; hell, even Dr. Evil.
Listen for the new series catch words, “Webb, Jack Webb” and “shaken, not stirred”.

There was a fourth book written by the author, who’s name escapes me, but it is Bourne as a much older man. The book is still for sale in most bookshops.
