I once heard Matt Damon joke during an interview that if there was a fourth movie from the Bourne franchise, it would be called “The Bourne Redundancy.” Safe to say, he and most other people wrote off there ever being a fourth installment. However, despite prior skepticism, it appears a fourth movie is in fact going to happen.
According to Variety, Universal Pictures has green lighted another movie, starring Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon. The film will also be directed by Paul Greengrass, who wonderfully spun two of the first three films (Supremacy and Ultimatum).
I’m not sure how I feel about this one. Those three movies are about as perfect as a trilogy can get. In a world where 3-parters are now released all the time and are typically known for diminishing quality, the Bourne movies actually got better with each turn, culminating with the masterpiece of The Bourne Ultimatum. Should Damon and Greengrass risk tampering with that legacy or can they really crank out another high-octane thriller? Where would the 4th movie sit in the story arc of the previous movies. Perhaps it would be a prequel to explain everything that started in Identity?
I meet this news with cautious optimism. If anything, they could just make a great action movie and not mess too much with the legacy.
There’s no word yet on when the movie will be written or produced.
