Messiah Complex came to an end this past week, and I have to say it may well have been the most exciting overall story arc since ‘Identity Crisis.’
For those unfamiliar with Messiah Complex, the story is born out of the recent decline in the mutant population. In a saga called “House of M,” Magneto’s daughter, the Scarlett Witch, wished for no more mutants. And like that, nearly 90% of the world’s mutant population disappeared. Plus there have been no new mutant births since the “House of M.”
Now, with news of a new mutant birth, everyone is fighting to get there hands on this precious newborn that may hold the key to the future or end of the mutant population (for more on Messiah Complex click here).
Messiah Complex was riddled with twists and turns, the most shocking was Bishop’s betrayal of the X-Men. What was even more shocking, or funny, is that Predator X (a monster that eats mutants) attacked Bishop in the conclusion of Messiah Complex. Now most thought that Bishop was dead, but it turns out that Predator X had only bit off a signifacant part of Bishops body.
Professor X tells Cable that the decision on the baby’s future belongs to Cyclops - the new leader of the X-Men. Cyclops chooses to hand the baby over to Cable. He has to be the posterboy for “Worst Father.” Once every decade Cyclops decides to hand off some baby to the future. Somebody should really report him to child services.
In James Bond fashion, the movies not over when all the villains appear to be dead. Bishop rises from what everyone thought was his death. His body, though horribly maimed, is still able to let loose one shot at the newborn mutant. Unfortunately, the blast hits Professor X’s head. That had to be the worst stroke of luck and irony. Recently Professor X was granted the ability to walk. And also was able to get back his telepathic powers. But, Professor X won’t be doing much telepathy or walking now.
“It was Xavier’s dream, wasn’t it? It began with him, and it ends with him. There are no X-Men.” So, says Cyclops - the leader of… wait what is he the leader of if there are no X-Men?
It’s not clear whether Professor X is dead or just comatose. But, who stays dead for long anyway in comicdom?
This was a great series, and an excellent hopping on point for X fans who’ve been looking to get back into comics. So, either wait for the graphic novel, or hit your comic shop for the back issues.
