If you haven’t seen “The Great Debaters,” please run to the movie theater and do so. Now. This gem is based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson (played by Denzel Washington), a professor at Texas’ Wiley College, a traditionally black school. In 1935, he inspired students to form the school’s first debate team, which went on to challenge prestigious schools in the sport. Denzel is naturally great as Tolson, but he’s equally brilliant as the film’s director. Forest Whitaker also provides a solid performance as Dr. James Farmer, Sr.

Nate Parker, Jurnee Smollet and Denzel Whitaker all give great performances that rival those of the older and more seasoned Washington and Whitaker. Parker in particular is able to steal many scenes that he is in, including those that showcase him going head-to-head with Washington. The character of James Farmer, Jr., played by Denzel Whitaker, is represented well and provides for an amazing transformation as the movie progresses.

As a whole, the Wiley College debate team is easy to root for and quickly moves from underdog to dominating opponent. However, during their rise to the top, each character still suffers insecurities and weaknesses, generating some truly awesome on-screen moments.

The movie does contain disturbing images of racism and oppression, but also has intense moments of success as well. It’s literally impossible to watch this movie without it inciting emotion out of you. Sometimes it’s a necessary evil to explore the ugliness of the past to see what successes have come in society. Be prepared for a story that truly inspires triumph and resolve against all odds.

I truly hope this film is acknowledged when it comes to the Golden Globes and Oscars. BuzzFocus.com rates “The Great Debaters” 9/10.
