According to today’s Financial Times, HD DVD may have been handed its penultimate blow in the format war versus Blu-Ray.

The publication states that following Warner Bros. move to Blu-Ray, Paramount is “poised to reveal” that it will be abadoning the HD-DVD format and offering its media in Blu-Ray exclusively. Such a move would leave Universal as the only big studio backing Toshiba’s HD-DVD format. Blu-ray is currently supported by 20th Century Fox, MGM, Walt Disney and Warner Bros.

If this is true, then Universal will have no choice but to jump ship as well. It also begs the question of if Microsoft will continue to support HD-DVD on its Xbox 360 console or will go with archrival Sony’s Blu-Ray.

Moral of the story: anyone out there ready to buy hi-def DVDs, hang on for a little bit longer to see how this war pans out.

UPDATE: According to Bloomberg, Paramount has denied claims that it dropped HD-DVD support.
