It’s a slow start to the New Year on the comic book scene. There are only two books on my pull list this week for Jan. 4. Ironically, there is only one book from each of the giants (Marvel, DC).
The first is Uncanny X-Men #494. Issue 494 is chapter 10 of Messiah Complex. Without any spoilers for thos who haven’t read Chapter 9 (X-Men 206), it is defintely a must read. Messiah Complex is easily the top book of the week and is also probably the best ongoing story arc right now in comicdom.

Next on the list is Detective Comics #840. There’s nothing really special here. Detective titles usually have a good story. It takes place after the events of Ra’s Al Ghul’s return, which was somewhat of a let down. Ra’s returned. Big deal, we got that from the title. no big changes. The issue is written by Paul Dini; art by Dustin Nguyen (SUPERMAN/BATMAN) & Derek Fridolfs; cover by Nguyen.

I’m loving MEssiah Complex. I just finished reading Chapter 9, but was upset to learn that Bishop seems to be behind it all. I don’t know what they’re doing with his character. When he was first introduced, I was thrilled to see a new black mutant (even though he was from the future and had a jerry curl, I guess it was retro). But why did the black man have to turn into the traitor?
I’m new here so one quick question. Do you pull any books not published by DC/Marvel? asking because I’m a huge Grendel fan, Nexus fan, etc.
