Now in limited release at select theaters across the country is Romance and Cigarettes, a solid romantic comedy starring James Gandolfini, Susan Surandon and Kate Winslet.
The movie is driven by its quirky characters and their offbeat dialogue. Gandolfini plays Nick, a working man who is having an affair with Tula (Winslet) behind his wife’s (Surandon) back. The movie is essentially a character study of Nick as he decides between his mistress and his wife.
I found it to be fresh movie-making from a cast that dared to be different. And quite frankly, seeing Tony Soprano himself in a musical made it well worth the price of admission. Winslet is also great in this movie, the best I’ve seen her since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
The film is directed and written by John Turturro and executive produced by none other than the Coen Brothers.
This musical is worth a viewing and you’ll find that it is a pleasant surprise. Go check it out now or definitely buy the DVD when it becomes available.
