Talk about ways to spend money. An unidentified client of Maggs Bros. Ltd. of London bought a single leaf from Mozart’s sketch for the “Sinfonia Concertante in E flat” for a record $228,484.
The new figure tops a previous sheet with notes for the opening to Rondo K.386 in A major, which sold for $184,000 in 1998 at Sotheby’s.
Senior specialist in Sotheby’s Music department Simon Maguire said, “The Sinfonia Concertante was Mozart’s first truly great masterpiece… It is one of Mozart’s greatest works, and we are thrilled to have handled a manuscript that takes us so close to its original inception.”
