ABC has been developing a television adaptation of the 2004 revival of the famed “Raisin in the Sun” Broadway play. This TV movie will make its world premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival in Utah. The play was a successful one, generating 2 Tony Awards and another Tony-nomination.
That cast featured Tony winners Audra McDonald and Phylicia Rashad, Tony-nomimee Sanaa Lathan and, of course, P. Diddy. I saw the play during its run 3 years ago and thought it was a really impressive showing by all the actors, including Diddy. While his acting chops paled in comparison to the rest of the cast, he did give the role a ton of energy.
The play is about the Younger family, headed by Walter Lee (Combs), that awaits the arrival of a life insurance check that they believe will make them rich. Each family members dreams about what they’re going to do with the check and how it will change their lives.
All the aforementioned characters will reprise their roles and will be joined by Sean Patrick Thomas and ER star, John Stamos.
The TV film will air on ABC on February 25, 2008 at 8 PM.
