Coming out on DVD this week is the independent film “Broken,” starring Heather Graham and Jeremy Sisto.

Graham plays Hope, a fitting name to a naive Midwestern woman that moves to  Los Angeles with big dreams of becoming a rock star. Hope’s talent is average at best and we’re not made to feel sorry for the fact that she is just one of many hopefuls that relocate to Tinseltown with the same dream.

In pops Jeremy Sisto, who indubitably represents Hope’s latest relationship, an addiction to heroin. Life is hard for Hope and this new fling is the only thing to help her escape the hellish reality that her life has become.

The movie’s time line jumps around, but the true story happening in real time all takes place one late night in a diner where Hope works (or scores drugs at - depending on which reality you believe is being depicted). Through several interactions with the honor roll of LA’s hopeless wannabes and low-lives, Hope is confronted with her dark side and the many dreams she’s had that have distanced themselves from her.

Sisto is great in his role and stars in the movie’s explosive ending. Graham also does a good job, and her relative inexperience in playing the guitar actually helps us realize just how far her rock star dream is. One thing’s for sure, this movie will make you think and the ending makes you realize that a completely different story was being told the whole time. Was Hope really a waitress at the diner or just another hapless junkie waiting for the next score. It’s pretty obvious that it’s the latter and such storytelling incites one to re-watch this dark and intriguing tale.

Definitely go pick this movie up and be prepared to give it another viewing once your done.

No, she was just another drug-user trying to get a score. What a pathetic loser
