Pastor John Weece of the Southland Christian Church is on a crusade. This crusade, however, is not one to search out religious artifacts, engage in holy war, or to help the poor.
Weece is on a one man crusade to help the soul of Britney Spears. His missionaries are the members of his congregation who he implores to support Britney despite her “devastating life choices.” His motivation comes from seeing Spears’ recent troubles with substance abuse and the custody loss of her children.
Weece stated on his church’s blog site, “Take a few minutes and write a note to Britney Spears… No preaching. No criticizing. Just love. As a church, let’s love Britney the way Jesus loves her.”
“If she were your next-door neighbor in the same situation without the money and success, wouldn’t you care about her problems? Wouldn’t you pray for her and offer her support and encouragement?” he asked members of the church.
The church’s director of communications Cindy Willison has been busy these past few days. Willison still collecting the letters on Friday and looking for the best way to get them directly to Spears. “This is an opportunity for us to reach out to someone who probably doesn’t have a lot of people in her life that care for her as a person.”
