Avatar Aang joins Avatar Roku in the Spirit World to learn the history of Roku’s relationship with Firelord Sozen. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko finds a parchment outside of his room that says he must learn the truth about his great-grandfather Fire Lord Sozen.
Aang and Zuko embark on a journey through the mutual pasts of Fire Lord Sozen and Avatar Roku. The two were childhood friends, before Roku learned that he would be the next Avatar. They even shared the same birthday. Before Roku embarks on a journey that would take him around the world to learn mastery of the four elements, Sozen gives Roku the ancestral prince family head piece.
When Roku returns from his travels, now a man, he marries his childhood crush. Sozen privately announces to Roku his ambition to expand the Fire Nation on Roku’s wedding day. But, Sozen adamantly rejects his proposition. The rift between the two begins to grow when Roku returns some years later to learn that Sozen has proceeded with colonization of Earth Kingdom territory. Avatar Roku humiliates Sozen in a battle, and tells Sozen to end his plans.
Decades pass. A volcanic eruption threatens the home of Avatar Roku. The Avatar fights vociferously against the volcano, but his efforts are not enough. Then Firelord Sozen appears to offer his help. They two word desperately against the volcanic eruption. When the earth beneath Sozen collapses, Roku quickly saves Sozen despite their past differences.
Unfortunately, not every good deed goes rewarded. When toxic gases hit Roku, Sozen leaves the Avatar to die. His obstacle now eliminated. The Firelord proceeds with his plans for world domination.
The Buzzfocus.com Avatar the Last Airbender Moment of the Week goes to Sokka and Kitara. While Aang is in the spirit world, his earthly body remains under the watchful eye of Sokka, Kitara and Toph. At one point, Aang’s body gets up in a horse stance and takes a spirit dump.
Kitara says, “Do they have bathrooms in the spirit world?”
Sokka replies, “As a matter of fact, they do not.”
Prince Zuko confronts his uncle about his past. Then Uncle Iroh reveals that it is time that he learn not about the great-grandfather on his father’s side, Sozen, but the great-grandfather on his mother’s side. Your mother’s grandfather was Avatar Roku, Uncle Iroh tells an astonished Zuko. That’s why you are so confused. Good and evil are both locked inside you in battle.
It looks like we will definitely see a change come from Prince Zuko in the future. He may even free Uncle Iroh to become the Avatar’s fire bending teacher, rekindling the friendship of Avatar Roku and Firelord Sozen.
