Though Peter Jackson will not be returning to direct “The Hobbit,” Ian McKellen is all on board. In a recent article on BBC.com, McKellen states that he “would be disappointed if they didn’t want to have the original Gandalf.”
“If I am still functioning and working well, it is very likely I would be asked to do it.”
“The Hobbit” is the prequel to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which details the adventure of Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo, also a Hobbit like Frodo, found the One Ring, while in the clutches of Gollum, originally known as Smeagol. He challenged the Gollum to a riddle contest, where Smeagol was challanged to answer the question, “What have I got in my pocket?” The answer was the One Ring, which Bilbo willingly gave to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings sequel.
Jackson was not called back to direct the Hobbit due to a financial dispute over “The Fellowship of the Ring” film.
