Prison Break Episode 2 : Fire/WaterThe second episode of Prison Break unfolded more the mystery of why Michael Scofield has been imprisoned in Sona. Early on Michael learns from Bellick that James Whistler, the prisoner he must break free, is staying in the sewers of Sona. Quickly, Michael is able to make contact with the prisoner, who we learned has killed the mayor of Panama City. Scofield talks with him briefly and tells him that he will return to break him out when the time is right. Whistler is somewhat skeptical of him and of the people that sent Michael to break him out.

On the other side of town, Lincoln meets with the mysterious lady that wants to exchange his son, LJ, and Sara Tancredi for Whistler. She also gives him some reasoning as to why they need Whistler freed. They cannot free him with bribes or any other tactics, so they have to go through the “back door”. The conversation ends with Lincoln threatening the lady, who comically calls herself “Susan B. Anthony”, and any of her family that he can get his hands on.

About 14 minutes in, we finally get our first sighting of Sucre! He’s beside himself with worry as to where Maricruz is. He buys a gun and some bullets because he obviously has a bone to pick with Bellick, who was responsible for his girl being missing.

Back in Sona, Bellick starts to get a little curious as to why Scofield is interested in Whistler. In a matter of minutes, the secret of Whistler’s whereabouts that Michael discovered becomes known by everyone.  Mahone learns from a talkative inmate that whoever in Sona kills Whistler will be able to get a trial and potentially released from the prison (the wishes of Panama’s mayor). Also, Bellick, in exchange for food and clothing, tells Luchero that Whistler is hiding out in the sewers. This launches a search party into the sewers, where Mahone is caught trying to free Whistler. They both escape.

Sucre shows up at Sona to visit Bellick demanding to know where Maricruz is… at gunpoint. Bellick confesses that he never kidnapped her and merely scared her away. Sucre, jubilant that she is ok, races off, leaving Bellick pleading for help.

When Lincoln visits Michael, he is given the note that Whistler gave Michael during his death match. Michael also tells Lincoln to tell the kidnappers that he’s going to do everything he can to break Whistler out, or die trying. Lincoln stumbles upon Sucre at a bus stop and can’t convince the former Fox River inmate to help him free Michael. Sucre is off to find Maricruz, who has apparently made her way back to Chicago…where Sucre is still a wanted man. Lincoln leaves him by stating that the best thing he could do for Maricruz is to leave her alone. Later on Sucre realizes that he’s right and calls Maricruz to tell her he’s not coming back… at least not now. Lincoln discovers that the note Michael was given leads to a bank and a woman that knows about his bank account there. A similar note wound up in the hands of Whistler’s girlfriend. Lincoln follows her to the bank and discovers that she recovered a bird guide from Whistler’s lock box. He confronts her outside and then steals it from her.

Mahone ventures down into the sewer to look for Whistler and finds him when the inmate can’t suppress an involuntary cough. Unsurprisingly, he digs him out in order to use the wanted inmate as leverage. A whole series ensues where Mahone chases Whistler down, a prison riot breaks out due to the water shortage, and Michael saves the day by creating an explosion that solves the water crisis. Luchero quickly realizes that Michael helped him out and grants Michael’s wish of removing the bounty on Whistler’s head.

So there you have it. Yes, the show is straying further and further away from reality with each episode, but I still feel engaged in the action and wanting to know what happens next. Tune in next week to see Michael develop a plan to get him and Whistler out of Sona.

I’m glad the whole whistler disocvery thing happened quickly. Normally, they’d drag something like that out over like 4-5 episodes and then michael’s plan would’ve failed anyway. Now, I want to see how they get past those prison guards… and please, no digging 100yd tunnels with a spoon.
