Go Joe! That’s right, Paramount Pictures has finally given the green-light to the big screen production of G.I. Joe the movie. Stephen Sommers, director of the Mummy movies has been recruited to direct the film.
The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned that the Joes will have a more international tilt, dropping the “Real American Hero” tag to reflect the current geopolitical climate. Of course it’s only doing this so that it does well overseas.
I’m also glad to see that the film will include most of the main characters in Cobra: Cobra Commander, Destro, the Baroness, Zartan, and the Dreadnoks. There’s no mention of the twins Tomax and Xamot or the sinister Serpentor.
On the G.I. Joe side, Duke will be present along with Snake Eyes and Scarlett.
The movie is slated to be released during the summer of 2009.
So there you have it, G.I. Joe the movie in just two years. It would’ve been stupid on Paramount’s part to deny this project given the mega success of Transformers this summer.
