HGTV’s Design Star has taken its competition to the next level in Season 2. Forget the digs of New York City, the show’s locale is none other than Sin City, Las Vegas. Yes, they’re still looking for a skilled and dynamic personality to earn their own design show, but the process to get there is a whole lot more rigorous and fun too!
This season starts off in Hollywood with an audition that aims to whittle 30 finalists down to 11. This time around, judges are looking for much more out of the contestants. Not only do they have to have great ideas, but they have to look good in front of the camera and be able to communicate why they’re the best. In fact, each contestant is put through 3 tests: a construction challenge to show how handy they are, a hosting challenge to demonstrate their on-camera like-ability, and the final audition challenge where they have to convince the judges that they have what it takes to be the next Design Star. The elimination process is certainly not without its share of comic relief as well as you’ll see some pretty wacky contestants make a strange case for why they should be in the running.

Returning as judges are Vern Yip, Martha McCully, and Cynthia Rowley. Season 1 Winner David Bromstad guest-judges in the first episode in place of the temporarily absent Rowley. Also back is energetic host Clive Pearse.
Fans of the first season will love to see the show back bigger and badder while new viewers will find it a refreshing competition where true talent is necessary to progress. On top of that, expect a wild ride when the contestants live and work together. The judges couldn’t have picked a more eclectic group. A trucker, a stay at home mom, a hairdresser and all types of other designers will make for a very explosive competition.
If you’re a professional interior designer or you don’t have a fashion-tuned bone in your body, you’ll enjoy this show. Remember to tune in for the premier this Sunday at 10pm on HGTV!
