When the Dark Knight hits theaters in 2008, fans can expect more than an ordinary viewing experience. Christopher Nolan has opted to shoot four scenes on IMAX cameras. This is the first time a major film has ever been shot on IMAX lenses. Typically, movies appearing in IMAX theaters, like the recent release of Spider-Man 3, are just modified for IMAX screens. The Dark Knight will actually be shot with the giant 15/70 film format of IMAX cameras, transforming the image to fill the entire screen.

This bold move by Nolan is to be commended. Though the Bag Man still has qualms about seeing Heath Ledger play the Joker, a true IMAX experience would create the surreal horror that befits a villain of the Joker’s caliber.

Director Nolan shared the following, “In continuing the story of such a great icon I’m thrilled to be able to expand the scope of the film, not just in terms of its story, but in giving Batman and The Joker the largest possible canvas on which to face off. No existing technology compares with the IMAX format in terms of its ability to throw the audience into the action, and we’re very proud and excited to use this technology in a way that no one has before.”

The Dark Knight is scheduled for release July 18, 2008.
