Actor and Director Mel Gibson is receiving praise for his recent stint in an alcohol rehabilitation program. After last June’s drunken anti-Semitic outburst with police, on a Malibu highway, Gibson was ordered to attend the rehab program. He pleaded no contest to charges of drunk driving. The penalty included three years’ probation and a fine.

Malibu Superior Court Judge Lawrence J. Mira praised the actor, saying, “I truly believe the rehabilitation that is being effected in this case is effective, and I don’t want anything to interrupt that.” Gibson was not asked to appear at Friday’s hearing. “I know his extensive participation in a self-help program — and I should note he has done extensive work, beyond which was required.”

Gibson will have to return to court in August for a final progress report.
