Marcelo Alvarez will no longer reprise the role of Hoffmann at the Met. Instead of finding another tenor to replace him, the Met has switched next season’s performance from Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann to Bizet’s Carmen. It’s been a decade since the Met has made a move like this. In the 96-97 season the met was forced to swap Verdi’s La Forza del Destino for Un Ballo in Maschera. Luciano Pavarotti forced the Met to make the chance since he was not able to learn the role of Don Alvaro by the time of performance.
On the change of performances, general manager Peter Gelb shared the following, “We want to ensure that the world’s greatest singers are performing at the Met in roles that suit them best.”
The show is set to open on February 4.
