In 2006, the Golden Globe Awards was moved to Monday night. The awards show wanted to avoid a repeat of the ratings travesty the prior year when it went head-to-head against ABC’s Sunday night hit show Desperate Housewives. For the past two years the Globes have aired on Monday nights, more specifically to Martin Luthor King Jr. day of observance. The federal holiday conveniently eliminated the risk of would-be ratings competitors.

Next year, however, Martin Luther King Jr. day will be observed on January 21, later in January than usual. The HFPA, the organization behind the Globes, believed that waiting until January 21 was too late to air its awards show. So, instead the HFPA has opted to move their awards show to January 13 to avoid Monday night ratings toppers like 24, Heroes, and Prison Break.

The nominees for Golden Globe Awards will be announced on December 13.
